Games to Look out for on Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2011

Here's some games that released this year that you probably didn't play or have been waiting for price drops. Look out for sales on these titles during Black Friday and Cyber Monday as I recommend them all.
  • Shadows of the Damned:
    • This game is about 8-10 hours long, but a hell of a lot of fun and really funny. There is no multiplayer.
  • Alice: Madness Returns:
    • Don't believe the review scores because this game is simply amazing and one of my favorite titles released this year. The game is around 25 hours long and a unique ride of combat, platforming, and puzzle solving in a crazy psycho world.
  • Witcher 2:
    • It's highly recommended to have a very nice gaming PC for this title as the graphics are simply amazing when maxed. Witcher 2 makes a lot of improvements over the original, provides about 30 hours worth of gameplay, and some big choices that affect the game and the endings.
  • Dragon Age 2:
    • What?! I know this game is rushed and a disgrace to the name of Dragon Age, but it's worth playing through at least once because it does do some things right. Don't pay more than $20 for it though. game is around 40-50 hours long and has different endings.
  • Resistance 3:
    • I'm not a fan of shooters much myself and I haven't played the other 2 games but this game really won me over because it was a lot of fun combined with a good story and beautiful graphics. The game is about 10 hours long single player and has full Co-Op and online multiplayer.
  • Bulletstorm:
    • Just a shit ton of fun killing stuff with some really fun weapons, awesome executions/combat moves wrapped up in a funny story. Around 8 hours long for single player. Has online co-op challenges. Should be pretty cheap now since this came out early this year.

Rage Review

Score: 8/10
Length: 15-19 Hours (depending on skill/difficulty)
Available For: PC, PS3, Xbox 360
Platform Review: PS3

Rage is not Fallout 3. Rage is not Borderlands. Don’t go into Rage expecting these games or you’ll most likely end up disappointed. Rage is a blend of some aspects of both those games but it’s still very much its own style of game. Rage is at its core two games: first person corridor shooter and a racing/combat racing game.

Rage is not a role playing game. There is no leveling, no skills, and no choices that affect the story. The only way for a weapon to do more damage is to change to different types of ammo. Rage does however have a couple of things that are often found in RPG’s such as a crafting system, gathering of loot in the world and from enemies, and a couple of upgrades for health/armor.

The basic gameplay cycle of Rage is: grab a quest from quest-giver, move to the quest on a vehicle through semi-open world, enter a building, engage is corridor style FPS while completing quest, then return for your reward at the quest giver. There are no experience points as mentioned before so your reward is usually a weapon, ammo, cash etc. The formula is set up similar to an RPG without being an RPG. The shooting is top notch with semi-intelligent AI and varied encounters as one would expect from ID. ID software knows how to make a shooter and it really shows in this game. The story in Rage is definitely not the game’s strongest aspect, but it is decent and is a much more story driven game than most shooters out there.

The crafting system in rage is very basic, but there are some very fun gadgets and ammo that can be crafted. From dynamite arrows to sentry bots that walk around and kill enemies for you, there are plenty of cool things to help you throughout the game. To build items, the player will need to find ingredients in the world or buy them from vendors. Once the players has all the ingredients they can craft any item from anywhere in the world (even in the middle of fights).

In addition to the shooting parts of the game there are races involving a few different types of vehicles. There is a mix of timed races, points gathering, and straight of 3 lap racing. Some of these races allow the use of weapons like rocket launchers, machine guns, and plasma cannons which can make the races chaotic but fun. The races are fun, but nothing revolutionary. Most of these races are optional, but completing them will grant you the ability to upgrade your cars with increased armor, weapons, better tires, etc. than can help the main story line slightly since there is a little bit of vehicle combat moving between shooting quest hubs.
Rage’s graphics for rage (on the PS3 version) look amazing for being run on a 6 year old console. The textures are sharp as hell, phenomenal lighting, etc. running at 60 FPS all make the game look stunning. All is not perfect however as the game currently has a texture popping issue across all platforms that can be very noticeable at first, but eventually the player stops noticing it after a while.

Overall, Rage is a very solid shooter that stands on its own but better games have been released this year. Rage is an exciting ride that plenty of fun in store. Rage lasted me about 19 hours on Nightmare difficulty to finish doing all the side quests, mini games, races, and main story. There are online races and co-op missions that will add even more hours for those that are interested. I would recommend waiting for a price drop for budget gamer, since this game is fun enough at $60 but other games out right now are currently better at full price (Arkham City, Dark Souls, etc.).

Highlighteers Program!

It's becoming harder for me to keep up with everything on my own anymore with working basically two full time jobs, one I hate (Real job) and the other I LOVE to do (streaming). I need your help and will reward you for it!

Want a chance to earn a game on steam? Make Highlights of my Stream! Highlighting is easy and I'll post an instructional video and post soon for it.

Every good highlight will earn you one chance to earn a steam game as long as you follow the rules below. We will draw a winner twice a month and that person will get a chance to buy one steam game of their choice worth a set amount of $$ that I'll be deciding later (probably $5-$10).

Rules for Earning a Chance at a Steam Game:
  • The moment highlighted must be something entertaining and worthy of a highlight. Highlights of meaningless junk won't count. I will decide what counts and what doesn't.
  • You must be the FIRST person to highlight that moment. Highlighting someone else's highlight or after someone else will not count. So highlight quickly.
  • Only highlights made during the period of the drawing will count towards your chances. i.e. once a prize is drawn your number of chances resets.
  • Currently the Drawing periods will be the first and last half of each month. Program starts TODAY, first prize will be awarded on 10/31/11. Highlights created between the time of this posting and that date will count.

Upcoming Adventure Game Trailers

Bracken Tor: Time of Tooth and Claw

Bracken Tor, the sequel to Barrow Hill, involves tracking down and filming a strange beast in an eerie forest setting. The main character is a journalist and getting video of this strange creature will let him hit it big. Bracken Tor is currently estimated to release around October 28th, but this game has been constantly getting delayed. The only trailer for this game unfortunately doesn't show any gameplay so I've included screenshots.

The Book of Unwritten Tales

The Book of Unwritten Tales is one of most critically aclaimed adventure games that revolves around a boy and a creature known as the critter on their quest to find a powerful artifact. The game is full of hilarous references and paraodies of popular books, movies, and games. The game was released in 2009 in German, but was never released in english until now due to bankruptcy of the old publisher. The english version of this game is set to release at the end of october in the UK.
